38 repliesThe file archive has now a new option to directly display minimaps of CS2D maps. Just click the new icon right to the screenshots. The minimaps are generated with PHP.
The popups that appear when you type "user:" or "@" now have a "Search" button as well. It opens a text field were you can enter the beginning of a nick. You'll see up to 10 nicks which start with the same chars. Each can be clicked to insert the corresponding user ID.
I removed that search button (see previous post). Instead you can search names at the same popup without needing to click at search first. Should be much more convenient.
You can now display all entities or all spawns when viewing a minimap in the CS2D file archive.
You are now FORCED to upload at least one image when uploading a file to certain sections of the file archive. Otherwise your upload won't be accepted.
Increased Image Size
File archive image upload size has been increased from 1 mb to 3 mb.
Compression size (maximum size before the website will automatically compress your images to make them smaller) has been increased from 100kb to 200kb.
You can now preview files in file archive zips by clicking their names in the file content view (little magnifier icon). Currently supported formats are:
texts:
'txt', 'cfg', 'lst', 'dat', 'lua', 'php', 'c', 'cpp', 'h', 'ssh', 's2s
images:
'jpg', 'jpeg', 'png', 'gif'
Edit:
basic audio support added:
'mp3', 'ogg', 'wav'
(direct soundfile playback is only possible if your browser supports it, like Chrome for instance)
Edit²:
bmp preview is now supported as well but note that bmps are not made for the web and loading them is slow.

There's a new forum tag: faq! This way you can easily lead people to a FAQ. Just enter
1
faq:
Sample:
1
faq:password
I forgot my password! How to get it back?
You can now filter your PMs by keywords. I did not have enough motivation to add a "from/to" filter as well but I think it's a nice improvement anyway
Two tiny updates for the code-tag:
the inline mode now also shows a
fancy green box. Apart from that it's unchanged.
there's a new mode called plain. It just disables tag-parsing for the text block inside it without visually changing how the text is displayed: [b]This stuff[/b] is not [i]parsed[/i] at all because it's [u]inside[/u] an [quote]invisible[/quote] code="plain"-tag :ok: It's inline without any linebreaks as well so you can't even see where it starts and ends It basically does what the inline mode did before.
The intention of this change is to allow people to show and still highlight short inline code snippets without having to use a big code box with line breaks which unnecessarily bloats posts. Based on suggestions from Ideas For UnrealSoftware Site.
When trying to log in into a banned account you now see who banned it. If a reason has been specified it will be displayed as well.
Profile ban info
In the profile you will now also see who banned an account and when. If a reason has been specified it will be displayed as well.
@Moderators: Please be aware that ban reasons (reasons specified when changing a mode to a banned mode) are now visible to everyone. The system always only shows the last mode change reason though.
Discord & Twitch
I also secretly added Discord and Twitch to the list of things you can specify in your profile (this already happened several days ago I just didn't announce it here)
Sending friend requests did not work at all since the webserver move. Thanks to TheWizardofWoz for letting me know. The problem should be fixed now.
Some of you know that I'm planning to rename "Unreal Software" to "Funky Fart". The domain funkyfart.com is already registered for that purpose.
As a first step of that transition I now introduced the new user ranks:
User Funky Farter
Super User Super Farter
Security Supporter Security Farter
Reviewer Fart Reviewer
Moderator Fart Moderator
Admin Fart Admin
Enjoy!
The previous post was just a joke. Changes have been reverted.
Link Spam Counter-Measures
I did however take that opportunity to continue my everlasting fight against spam by implementing two - in my opinion - very strong protections:
Links are NOT allowed anymore in file comments. You can still use thread:/file:/user: tags though. Existing comments are not affected but you won't be able to edit them unless you remove existing links. (this includes "auto-linked" content which is detected via "://" and "www." and the URL-tag)
In the entire forum, in file descriptions and in comments links are now only visible to users who are logged in! This way spammers can't try to trick search engine rankings by placing links because search engines crawl the site without account login and therefore can't see the placed links at all.
This should ultimately render all link placements entirely useless (if I'm right and it's merely done for SEO trickery). Did you hear me, foolish spam people? It's useless! Get a real job! I'm determined to take additional steps if link spam continues.
You can't f*ck with
PS: that last "statement" is extra cool because it's the following in plain text:
You can't f*ck with :us:
Amazing.
After some user feedback I decided to allow people to see links again without login.
All forum/comment links now have a
rel="ugc nofollow"attribute. That tells search engines that these links have been posted by users (ugc = user generated content) and that search engine crawlers shouldn't follow (nofollow) etc.
Posting new links in comments is still not possible (see previous post). I want to see what happens in the next weeks. Afterwards I will decide if I can try to allow links in comments again or if I have to use even more strict rules.

Unfortunately link spam continues (I delete all that staff as quickly as I can so you might not even see a lot of it) and I'm forced to introduce more restrictions.
Therefore new* users are now no longer allowed to post any clickable links.
I'm aware that there are ways around this limitation. You can still post non-clickable links easily but I hope that this step makes spamming here less attractive.
I also think and hope that legit new users are smart enough to still post non-clickable links if they really want and need to.
There are some large files e.g. Stranded II Extension Mod in the file archive for which downloading didn't work anymore (probably for quite a while already). I fixed this today.
I added highlight.js to the page to add syntax highlighting. Currently it defaults to Lua syntax highlighting. If you want to highlight another language you can specify it in the opening
[code]-tag by adding
lang=LANGUAGE
You can also write
lang=autoto let highlight.js detect the language automatically. This only works well with longer code snippets though. That's why I don't rely on auto detection by default and assume that everything is Lua if not specified otherwise.
Please note:
All code tags are highlighted, except for
code=plaincode tags
Code is always displayed with a dark style. Even if you choose a bright website style.
The code input popup now allows to select the language
Tabs are no longer converted to 5 spaces. Instead they stay what they are and are displayed properly (also they are now a bit smaller).
Unreal Software Title Color
I changed the "Unreal Software" title text color on the start/portal/welcome page to use the main color of the selected style. It didn't look clean to use another color there.

The mobile / small screen navigation has been optimized for better usability (especially for right-handed users, sorry fellow lefties). This means in detail:
Less frequently used profile and language switch are on the left side of the screen
Main nav buttons are on the right side
Dropdown when tapping a nav link now spans the full screen width
The portal/home button is wider
I may decide to entirely remove the language switch on mobile later but for now I feel safer having it there in case someone - for any reason - has the wrong language and needs to switch.
Also it's kind of annoying that you can interact with the website while the dropdown is open by pressing the space which is not covered by the dropdown. Pressing there should instead just close the dropdown without doing anything else. Will improve that later.
I used AI to generate new audio samples for the CAPTCHA read aloud function. It's now a more friendly, female voice and the audio is much cleaner.
