Maybe because you are running Windows XP? Windows XP is not as bad as Vista in these issues IIRC. You have to consider that some years ago there were attempts to implement a very strict
Trusted Computing implementation in any sold computer system. At this time Vista was just in development.
We can be glad that these TC efforts didn't get through as bad as planned or we couldn't run "unallowed" software or hardware at all.

You can always install another operating system. No need to buy a new computer. Everything software related can always be fixed
For example, you can check eBay for cheap copies of Windows XP (and Vista).
If everything else fails, you can also download a copy of a free operating system (for example
Ubuntu Linux). Although many games don't work, you can still get online and do normal work with it. This should help you out until you get your hands on a copy of Windows.

Have you tried calling your vendor and explaining him your problem? Maybe you can get a new copy of your OS.
