Some of you already know this, so please don't flame. I'm doing this to help other fans of the C&C series who might not know.

As I was reading through the German forums here, DC mentioned that S2 made it into a German gaming magazine! Hell yeah! Well done!

But it was also mentioned that Command and Conquer - Tiberian Sun was free... Well, as sad as this may be, it was brand new news to me. So, being the sceptic that I am, I had to go check. Well, after a little looking around, it turns out that this isn't the first time at all, and for the fans of the series, they may be missing out on a golden opportunity.

EA games have made these freeware:
Command and Conquer (Gold Edition A.K.A Tiberian Dawn)
Command and Conquer: Red Alert (The first, not the second)
Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun (With the Firestorm expansion included!)

and they have them all nicely laid out with installation instructions here:

I am a major fan of these games and finding this is a wonderful moment for me.

Yeah, this may be old news to some, but it was new to me and I'm sure there are other people out there who don't know, so let's spread the awareness.

The only game of those few which i have at the moment is Red Alert. I always prefered the RA series, not sure why. Probably my favourite game of all time, was my first game too .

the old games are actually much better than the new ones. C&C 4 is just crap and not really an RTS game in my opinion. you can't even build buildings or collect resources. all you do is creating units all the time with unlimited resources. it's a bad joke.

The nostalgia of the classics are unbelievable.

C&C 1995 and Red Alert remain the best for me..
The military philosophies of the different factions and the way soldiers scream are very realistic and nostalgic, so are the scenarios and missions.

Tiberian Sun was nice, it took place in the future but still somehow got the realistic feeling of warfare, and a succesfull sequel. Red Alert 2 was the last drop for me, it looked way to cartoony/cheesy and glorified war, as if it was ment for kids. Sure it had a big community, and competetive online play, for me this game is on the edge between good and shitty.

I don't care for the new games like Tiberium Wars / RA3, they are horrible..

They said they wanted to take a "different approach" to the series, and not to mention it had to fit with the storyline, but more then half of the C&C fanbase agrees this game is a pile of doggypoopy, and so do I.
have you seen the ending of the game? Horrible. They probably had a limited budget to work with.

The new C&C games sure suck alright
I bought RA3 thinking it would rock with its almighty features but when it really played the game the features were either overpowered or loaded like shit
Then i installed RA2 and sold the copy of RA3

EA is awesome... well, they just get all our money from our pockets (building idiot stuff like The Sims 3 Store) and then feeling bad about it (oh really?) and releasing old games as freeware ones.

The same happened with GTA 2, from Rockstar Games.

Are they stealing ideas from each other?

A lot of game companies see this as a cheap way of getting people into the franchise. By giving away games that are either out of production or are no longer selling in large amounts, they get players hooked on the classics, promising the players that the new version that they're promoting along side the free release will be so much better and because people get something really great for free, they think it's worthwhile forking out £30 odd for the new one, just to find out it's pants. So in the end, they get a bigger customer base and sell a fair few extra copies of the new game off the back of the classic game's reputation.

In the download for RA(1), when you unrar the disks, you also get a HD vid of a RA3 trailer and a .lnk file to "pre-order" your copy of RA3...

I deleted these and just kept the disk ISOs and the patch...

Hey, just cause they give me something for free doesn't mean I trust their marketing spin. I just say "Thanks for the free classic game! Oh... And shove your promotion up your..." Yeah, you know.

Just don't let them catch you like that. I saw the C&C series start going down hill since C&C: Renegade. I knew, once they made that, they ain't gonna stop messing with C&C, so I stopped at Yuri's Revenge.

I think I've played Generals once and I didn't like the obscurity of the monetary system. Mainly because there was no more fighting over resources, which is an integral part of of the battle! Secure the money, so the enemy has nothing to buy with!

Just wondering but does any of you guys know how to play Red Alert 2 over the Internet?(I already know how to over the lan)

There is a still a dedicated community playing online, you just don't need to register. so at the log-in screen just fill in a name you want and a password and it will be saved.

What's your opinion of C&C Generals & Zero Hour?

I think it's a failed attempt to bring real life modern situations and events in war and put it into a game.. It's cheesy and biased and it has stereotypes which I don't like.

Overall it doesn't make any sense to me, and the explosion effects goes into such a slowmotion, it's just warfare for kids.

I like them too. You just shouldn't compare them to the other parts of C&C. It's a completely different game (would've been better if they called it different)

@Topic: I've already known that they are free, and I've also seen some patches for being able to play the oldest ones on LAN. But I'm not sure where I got them from...
