What's up with Epic and giving away their stuff for free lately? UT4 I can understand, but the whole damn engine? Wow. Well at least they get 5% royalty of products which are using it.
Many game engines are now available for free or a very low price. Like CryEngine or Unity which also has a free version. The idea behind this is probably to make these engines avilable to small studios and indie developers which have become much more important over the last few years.
Moreover constantly earning 5% of the sales of many developers is probably better than selling "a few" licenses.
Anyway this is great news. The Unreal engine is awesome.
I've an question.If I release a FREE game, have I to pay 5% ... ?
If you release a free game you never get up to the $3.000 revenue point, which means you don't a pay 5% fee. Because you never shipped or sold the game for any money at all.
And even if you somehow managed to convince them with a fully free game that you have a revenue of $3.000 they shall get 5% of nothing, which is still nothing.
@ SQ: Well, I still think that people should use the UE4 now instead of the unity engine. The unity engine pricing system is (honestly) really, really poor.
